Semien powers A's in 21-3 rout of Angels

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) With a postseason berth within their sights, the Oakland Athletics are leaving nothing to chance.

Marcus Semien had three hits and a career-high five RBIs, Stephen Piscotty homered and drove in four runs and the Oakland Athletics hammered the Los Angeles Angels 21-3 on Thursday.

The Athletics reduced their magic number for clinching a playoff berth to five. Since June 15, Oakland is a major league-best 58-25.

Yanks try to deny Red Sox clincher again

NEW YORK -- The Boston Red Sox are trying to secure their third straight American League East title while the New York Yankees are preventing it from happening and auditioning potential starting pitchers for the wild-card game.

So far, the Yankees are 2-for-2 in keeping the champagne in storage for their rivals and New York will try to complete the sweep and keep the Red Sox from clinching Thursday night in the finale of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.

Mattingly likely back as Marlins manager

MIAMI (AP) Derek Jeter signaled Thursday that Don Mattingly is expected to return next year as manager of the Miami Marlins, providing some dugout continuity for a last-place team in transition.

Mattingly has one season to go on a four-year contract he signed when he joined the Marlins for the 2016 season.

Dodgers star Puig has home burglarized

LOS ANGELES (AP) Burglars caused $10,000 worth of damage to Los Angeles Dodgers star Yasiel Puig's home while attempting to steal a safe.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the suspects broke into Puig's San Fernando Valley home Tuesday night. They ransacked the residence, found a safe in the second-floor master bedroom, and dragged it downstairs to the front door.

Pirates' Kuhl undergoes elbow surgery

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl underwent reconstructive surgery on his right elbow and will miss the entire 2019 season.

The team says Kuhl had the surgery Wednesday in New York. Kuhl went 5-5 with a 4.55 ERA in 16 starts for Pittsburgh this season. The Pirates initially placed him on the disabled list because of right forearm soreness following a loss to the New York Mets on June 26.

Desperate Phils open series vs. Braves

ATLANTA -- The Phillies get the Braves in Philadelphia for three games to end the regular season, but it may not matter after the teams' four-game series at SunTrust Park starting Thursday night.

The Braves' magic number to win the National League East is down to six and that means they can clinch before the Phillies leave Atlanta on Sunday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Billie Jean King and partner Ilana Kloss have joined the Los Angeles Dodgers ownership group.

The Dodgers made the announcement Thursday. The tennis great says Dodgers owner and chairman Mark Walter and the organization have proven to be leaders in sports on and off the field.

Mets' Flores to miss rest of season

WASHINGTON (AP) New York Mets infielder Wilmer Flores will miss the rest of the season because of soreness in both knees.

Manager Mickey Callaway said Flores has earl -onset arthritis in both knees and will receive injections to alleviate the pain.
