Yanks start CC vs. Astros in ALCS Game 7

HOUSTON -- In seeking to become the 14th team in postseason history to rally from a 2-0 series deficit, the New York Yankees will turn to the most veteran member of their staff.

Left-hander CC Sabathia will attempt to pitch the Yankees to their 41st pennant on Saturday night at Minute Maid Park in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros.

Sabathia made two starts the last time the Yankees qualified for the World Series, going 0-1 with a 3.29 ERA in a six-game victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009.

Cubs fire pitching coach Bosio

CHICAGO (AP) Chris Bosio is out as the Chicago Cubs' pitching coach after six seasons.

A person familiar with the situation says the team said the team will not pick up his contract option for next season. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move has not been announced.

Giants reassign Righetti to front office

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The San Francisco Giants have reassigned longtime pitching coach Dave Righetti from manager Bruce Bochy's field staff to special assistant to the general manager, working under Bobby Evans.

The club announced Righetti's role change to the front office Saturday, along with bullpen coach Mark Gardner moving into a special assignment job assisting in pitching evaluations. Assistant hitting coach Steve Decker is now a special assistant in baseball operations.

Baker won't return as Nationals manager

WASHINGTON (AP) Dusty Baker is done as manager of the Washington Nationals after two seasons, two NL East titles and zero playoff series victories.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said he told Baker the news via telephone Friday morning. Baker's two-year deal with the club is expiring.

Dodgers expect SS Seager to play in WS

CHICAGO (AP) Corey Seager is expected to be in the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup for the opener of the World Series after missing the NL Championship Series because of back pain.

Seager, an All-Star shortstop, watched from home as the Dodgers eliminated the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs in Game 5 on Thursday night.

Puerto Rican players bond over hurricane

NEW YORK (AP) When the Houston Astros' owner offered Carlos Beltran charter aircrafts to send relief aid to Puerto Rico and evacuate cancer patients from the island after Hurricane Maria, the Puerto Rican slugger quickly thought about "the chat group."

He wanted to send word to other Puerto Rican teammates and coaches with the Astros, as well as friends from other teams, that one of the airplanes was available to pick up family members who couldn't return to the mainland because of the lack of commercial flights.

Rebuilding Tigers to stay under radar

DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Tigers hired Ron Gardenhire to be their manager - and that may be the most newsworthy thing they do for a while.

With the managerial opening filled, the rest of the rebuilding process now resumes, and patience will be of the essence. General manager Al Avila made it clear the Tigers won't be trying to spend their way back into contention.

Dodgers use teamwork to reach Series

LOS ANGELES (AP) After third baseman Justin Turner and closer Kenley Jansen propelled the Los Angeles Dodgers to their most recent home playoff victory a few days ago, they took off their uniforms and pulled on T-shirts supporting a teammate.

Jansen's shirt urged fans to send Turner to the All-Star Game, albeit three months late. The red-bearded Turner's shirt simply bore Yasiel Puig's No. 66 in big blue numerals.
